The Charming Quirks of Others by Alexander McCall-Smith
This book, part of a series featuring Edinburgh philosopher Isabel Dalhousie, is more of a gentle enquiry than a full-fledged mystery, but is satisfying nonetheless. Isabel is hired to investigate the secrets of three men applying for a prestigious headmaster job at a local college.
