The Myth of You and Me by Leah Stewart

When Cameron was fifteen, Sonia was her best friend. Now Cameron is 29 and working as a research assistant to noted historian Oliver Doucet.

When an unexpected letter arrives from Sonia ten years after the incident that ended their friendship, Cameron doesn't reply, despite Oliver's urging. But then he passes away, and Cameron discovers that he has left her with one final task: to track down Sonia and hand-deliver a mysterious package to her. Now without a job, a home, and a purpose, Cameron decides to honor his request, setting off on the road to find this stranger who was once her inseparable other half.

It is a story that makes you think of those friends who have passed through your life at different stages.

How can you not like a book that features your parent's kitchen as a character. "The School of Essential Ingredients" is the first novel of a Seattle writer. She viewed the house when it was on the market after my mother died in 2005. She was so taken by the house and the fireplace in the kitchen that she decided to write it into the book.
The story is about a group of students attending cooking classes. Each chapter tells the story of a student. Described as being "a luscious slice of life" it relies heavily on the description of the food.
I was lucky enough to meet the author in Seattle because coincidentally the house is for sale again and I went down to see it and she met me there.
It is a very light story - the friendship connection is new friends meeting once a week and how their lives begin to connect.

The Senator's Wife by Sue Miller. This novel tells the story of a young woman who befriends her neighbour, the wife of a prominent senator. Meri is at the beginning of her marriage while Delia is in the later stages of life. Meri learns that Delia is married in name only and that she and her husband mostly live apart due to his infidelities. An unexpected pregnancy forces Meri to rethink her own marriage and responsibilities. When the senator has a stroke, Tom and Delia's relationship takes on a new dimension. The dynamic between these 2 women is what makes the story interesting. It builds toward an unlikely betrayal but all in all a good read.
