Truth and Bright Water by Thomas King. The novel takes place along the Canada/US border between the town of Truth in Montana and Bright Water which is an Ottawa Reserve. Focusing on two young boys it captures the essence on reserve life with dark humour and satire. The action takes place during a few weeks in the summer leading up to the annual "Indian Days". Several plots run through the book some ending in tragedy and all of them incorporating magical realism. King is one of Canada's best known native writers and this is a great example of his storytelling skills. Barb

Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson. A coming-of-age novel, narrated by Lisamarie Hill, set in the Haisla community of Kitamaat Village,in northern B.C. While Lisamarie waits for word of her brother Jimmy who is lost at sea on a fishing boat, she remembers her childhood in Kitamaat, her late teens as a runaway in Vancouver, and her grandmother. I liked this story a lot, partly because I could picture all the places in Kitimat to which she referred.
